Choosing between air, sea, and rail from China
Every mode has a sweet spot. Here's how experienced buyers pick.
Air
- When: Urgent, high-value, low-volume cargo.
- Transit: 3–7 days to most global hubs.
- Gotcha: Chargeable weight = max(actual, volumetric). Bulky-but-light cargo gets expensive fast.
Ocean
- When: Standard retail and industrial goods, planned inventory.
- Transit: 20–35 days depending on lane.
- Gotcha: Watch blank sailings in Q1 and demurrage at destination.
Rail (China–Europe)
- When: You want faster than ocean, cheaper than air, into Europe.
- Transit: 12–18 days.
- Gotcha: Winter service disruptions and border transloading can add days.
Rule of thumb
If the freight cost is more than 8–10% of cargo value, reconsider the mode.
If the cargo can't miss a launch date, price air or express.
If neither applies, ocean LCL/FCL is almost always the winner.
